Make Your Own 6.5" Flat 3 or 6 Pad Pak
  Lake Country, 6-1/2 inch,
Classic Flat Pads
Make Your Own 3 or 6 Pak
With all the talk of Lake
Country's CCS (Collapsed
Cell Structure) technology 6-1/2 inch Classic Flat Pads
may appear a bit old-fashioned. We are offering these pads in response to a
number of requests from professional detailers and paint technicians who have
spent their entire career working with flat pads. Flat pads have a slightly
different "feel" compared with CCS Technology pads especially when used with a
rotary polisher. Once mastered, flat pads break down the polish quicker since
fresh polish is not being constantly introduced to the surface. This allows a
skilled technician in a high-volume detail shop or paint and body shop to
accomplish more in less time.
Bottom line, if you're new to machine
polishing or even a serious enthusiast, we recommend
Lake Country's CCS Technology, 6-1/2 inch Pads. On the other hand, if you're
a skilled technician familiar with flat pads, here are the pads you grew up
with. Like an old pair of loafers, you'll love them the first time you put them
on your machine.
|
These
Classic Flat Pads feature two additional design innovations.
|
|
First, they continue to incorporate the latest, Constant Pressure™
technology.
Constant pressure may
not be good for people but it's great for polishing pads where you want a
uniform and constant pressure on the surface being polished. Professionals
have learned through experience to keep their machines parallel to the
surface being polished. Tilting the machine in any direction can
result in an uneven and excessive pressure being transferred to the
painted surface. |

|
|
Blue "Constant
Pressure" foam backing
absorbs unwanted polishing motions. |
|
This new, patented, Constant Pressure technology uses a layer of
engineered, instant rebound foam between the pad and the backing plate to absorb
off-axis movements while keeping the pressure of the pad on the surface
constant. NOTE:
The Gold Concours Finishing Pad does not have the Constant Pressure, blue
foam layer. The gold foam is so soft it is not required. |
|
The other patented, innovation
incorporated in these Classic Flat Pads are a curved outer edge. The curvature on the outer
edge of the pad allows easy transitions over seams and inclines.
We pay extra to have the top edge rounded over because it prevents pads from snagging
while polishing seams and edges.
|

|
|
Curved outer edge
allows easy
transition over seams. |
|
We also pay attention to the back of the
pad. Most pad manufacturers run the Hook and Backing material to the edge of
the pad. This material is very course and can cause scratching if it hits
the paint while working in tight spaces or around mirrors and wings.
We cut the Velcro
brand fastening material back 3/8 inch from the edge. This allows you to
work right against corners, mirrors, wings and complex angles without fear
of scratching the paintwork. |
 |
|
We cut the Velcro® brand
backing
material back 3/8" from the edge to
prevent scratching paintwork. |
|
Hook and Loop Back-Up Plates - These pads
have a VELCRO® brand fastening system that require your machine be fitted with a 6
inch, "hooked" Backing Plate. This plate may or may not have
come with your polisher. If you require a backing plate, we have 6 Inch Flexible
Backing Plates for both dual-action and circular polishers.
Different machines
require different backing plates. Dual-action polishers like the Porter
Cable 7424 and 7336 require a plate with a 5/16-24 threaded shaft. This is
our part number FBP-6DA.
Professional circular
polishers require a plate with a 5/8-11 receptacle. This is our part
number FBP-6C.
|

|
|
Note:
Different machines require
different backing plates. |
|
Here's a guide to help you
select the correct pad for your needs: |
|
Yellow, 6.5 inch, Flat Compounding Pad - More aggressive
cutting action than the white pad. Use this pad to compound older vehicles with
a dull, chalky or neglected finish.
Use this pad with caution. Compounding can
dull the surface (called compounding haze) which will require additional finish
polishing to remove. |
 |
|
Orange, 6.5 inch, Flat Polishing Pad -
This German foam has 90% of the cutting power of conventional compounding
pads but finishes like the White Polishing Pad.
Use this pad on painted
surfaces with
Menzerna Intensive Polish to remove 2000 grit swirls and defects with
minimal or no surface dullness or with Menzerna
Final Polish II to remove finer swirls. |
 |
|
White, 6.5 inch, Flat Polishing Pad -
The most often used pad. This pad has a mild cutting (cleaning) action and
should be used to apply light compounds, swirl removing polishes and
finishing polishes.
Use this Hi-Gloss
White Polishing Pad with
Menzerna Intensive Polish to remove
deeper swirls and with
Menzerna Final Polish II or BLACKFIRE
Gloss Enhancing Polish to maximize surface gloss. |
 |
|
Green, 6.5 inch, Flat Polishing Pad - Green foam offers a
mild polishing power yet leaves the surface with a high gloss finish. It is
excellent on German finishes including the new scratch-resistant clear
coats.
This is
the best pad
for applying one-step, polish/sealants like Menzerna
Acrylic Jacket, Klasse All-In-One and
Autoglym Super
Resin Polish when using a D-A
polisher.
|
 |
|
Black, 6.5 inch, Flat Glazing/Finessing Pad - This pad has
no cutting or cleaning action. It should be used to apply a glaze or a finessing
polish.
Use this Hi-Gloss
Black Glazing Pad to apply
Menzerna Finishing
Touch Glaze, 3M Imperial Hand
Glaze, and Meguiar's No. 7 Show Car
Glaze. You can
also use this pad to apply Meguiar's No. 3 Machine Polish
and 3M Finesse-It II
Machine Polish. |
 |
|
Red, 6.5 inch, Flat Glazing/
Finessing/Finishing Pad - Like the black pad, this red pad has no cutting or
cleaning action but is softer than the black pad. It
can be used to apply a glaze, a finessing polish or a finishing sealant.
Some detailers and body shops use
both a machine polish and a glaze. Having two colors of glazing pads
allows them to dedicate a specific color pad for a specific product to
avoid cross contamination. |
 |
|
Gold, 6.5 inch, Flat Concours Finishing Pad - Our super-soft, gold, Concours finishing pad is designed for applying the final wax or sealant to
create the absolute best shine. This gold foam is forty percent softer than
the red glazing/finessing foam listed above (100 pores per inch compared to
60 pores per inch for the red foam). The extra cell count means these gold
pads disperse wax and sealants more evenly.
This is also the pad to use
for layering one wax or sealant on top of another or for building up multiple
layers of shine.
|
 |
|
NOTE: The Gold Concours Finishing Pad does not have the
Constant Pressure, blue foam layer. The gold foam is so soft it is
not required. Proper
Cleaning - Wash foam pads in a bucket of car wash, soapy water (or use Snappy
Clean Pad Cleaner), rinse thoroughly, hand
squeeze out excess water and allow to air dry. Do not clean
pads or soak pads in dishwashing soap (Dawn) or laundry
detergents. |
