Founded in 1989 with a line of four
professional detailing products, Four Star Products owner's Rick Vaal and Sam
Lankford never imagined they would be major players in the world of
professional detailing products. After all, how could a self-taught formulator
without any formal chemical education hope to compete with industry mega-giant
3M?
It wasn't easy but Rick and Sam
persisted with an obsession for making a better product. They went from body
shop to body shop in their home state of Florida selling products from the back
of a pick-up truck and learning what their customers liked and disliked about
the products they were using. For sixteen years, Rick would listen, learn and go
back to his lab, formulate, test and tweak until his formulas achieved results
that the big boys couldn't duplicate.
Having a better mousetrap was still no
path to success. No major distributor was willing to take on an unknown,
unproven brand.
The company's big break came in 2006
when a boat manufacturer contacted Rick with a list of problems they were having
finishing their gel coat (fiberglass) hulls. Rick went to work, solved the
manufacturer's problems and brought to market a professional marine product
line. Word spread like wildfire and within 12 months, sixty-five boat
manufacturers in North America switched from their "name brand" detailing
products to Four Star Products. (Classic Motoring carries these marine detailing

Care.)
The word was out. A small chemical
company in Florida was seriously kicking butt. In 2007 a major, national, body
shop distributor evaluated the Four Star Professional product line and did the
unthinkable. They switched from their "name brand" products and started selling
Four Star products to professional detailers, body shops and restoration shops
nationwide.
